Schools closed Wednesday due to downed trees, road closures; Will reopen Thursday
All NHSD schools will reopen Thursday, May 1 after being closed Wednesday, April 30 due to downed trees and power lines, road closures, and widespread power outages across the district. With the emergency declaration in Allegheny County, the missed school day does not need to be made up.
We have made the decision to reopen schools because all district buildings have power, and, after consulting with local agencies, we believe that conditions will allow students and staff to travel to school safely.
We recognize that many in our community continue to face significant challenges, including storm damage and prolonged power outages. Students should bring their devices to school, and additional charging stations will be available for those who may still be without power at home.
Buses will make every effort to pick up students on time at their designated stops; however, some adjustments may be necessary, and delays are possible. We will do our best to keep families informed of any transportation or access issues that may arise.
If you have questions about your child’s specific bus route, please contact ABC Transit directly at 412-821-4000. You may also reach out to NHSD Transportation Coordinator Tim Jones at 412-318-1024 or jonest@nhsd.net.
A.W. Beattie will be open on Thursday for all students who have classes at their district or are able to travel safely. Because of storm damage, students not in attendance will be marked detained. NOCTI testing has been canceled for May 1.
Science PSSA
All fifth and eighth grade students will now take the science PSSA on Friday, May 2 and Monday, May 5. Please make sure your child's iPad is fully charged as the science PSSA will be taken entirely online this year. If you are without power, please leave your iPad at school on Thursday to charge.
The Highcliff fifth grade visit to the middle school, previously scheduled for Monday, will now take place on Friday, May 9.
