North Hills hosting Singing Saturday on March 16 with 30 students participating
Heather Pelat
Thirty students from the North Hills School District choral program will participate in the 6th Annual Singing Saturday this Saturday, March 16, at the North Hills Middle School. The event culminates with a concert for family and friends at 2:30 p.m. in the middle school auditorium.
Singing Saturday began years ago as an outreach effort by Pittsburgh Youth Chorus (PYC), formerly known as Children’s Festival Chorus of Pittsburgh. The event has traditionally been open to students in grades 4 and 5, however this year a middle school ensemble was added to include students in grades 6-9. The elementary ensemble will be led by PYC's Talisman Conductor, Steve Schmidt, while the middle school group will be conducted by PYC's Executive Director/Conductor, Lee Saville-Iksic.
Pittsburgh Youth Chorus is a collective of young people who have been empowered and inspired by the joy of singing. Led by a dedicated staff of choral professionals who specialize in the young voice, PYC is Pittsburgh's premier youth choral education organization serving the region through exceptional choral music education and artistry since 1983. With opportunities for singers ages 6 through 18, and with a focus on personal development, community engagement, travel, and cultural exchange, PYC's multifaceted programming is celebrated for its ability to nurture the potential of its participants while fostering confidence, dedication, and a sense of belonging.
The Pittsburgh Youth Chorus Teacher Advisory Committee’s goals for Singing Saturday are as follows:
to experience a new community of singers, a mass choir of about 130 voices!
gain musical leadership experience to take back to their own ensembles and districts.
rehearse and perform side-by-side with singers from Pittsburgh Youth Chorus.
North Hills music teachers Emma Jenkins, Lisa Marcellus and Maura Rushlander serve on the Teacher Advisory Committee.
Participating schools include Mt. Lebanon, North Allegheny, North Hills, East Allegheny, Bethel Park, Gateway, Elizabeth Forward, Freeport, Hampton, Norwin, South Fayette and Pittsburgh Public Schools.
