Highcliff fifth graders surprise classmate starring in Pittsburgh Public Theater's 'A Christmas Story'
Highcliff Elementary School’s fifth grade class traveled to Pittsburgh Public Theater on Wednesday, Dec. 11, to see "A Christmas Story" and surprise one of their classmates and stars of the show.
Ezekiel “Zeke” Dunn plays Schwartz in the classic holiday film showing at the theater this month.
When Highcliff staff found out there was a matinee during the school day, they knew they wanted to attend to surprise Zeke! But would it be possible?!
Unbeknownst to the students and more importantly Zeke, staff members worked with the Highcliff PTO and its 5th Grade Committee to plan the surprise. Without hesitation, the PTO agreed to pay for the entire trip including ticket and transportation costs -- unbelievably generous!
Permission slips were sent directly to fifth grade parents electionally and they were sworn to secrecy. Had a student found out about the trip accidentally told Zeke before the big day, it would’ve ruined the surprise!
Wednesday’s performance was amazing and Zeke was fabulous. During the curtain call, when he took his bow, the Highcliff contingent stood up and cheered.
“The look on his face when he realized the entire fifth grade class had come to cheer him on was priceless,” said Highcliff Elementary School Principal Kristy Bilderback, who was also in attendance.
But maybe the best part?
Mrs. Bilderback said, “When asked what their favorite part of the play was, most students responded with – the moment Zeke realized we were all there! This was a moment we don’t think anyone will forget!”
"A Christmas Story" is showing at Pittsburgh Public Theater at The O'Reilly Theater through Dec. 22. Find showtimes and purchase tickets online.
